MLOps for business — production AI that works

MLOps: production ML pipelines, drift monitoring, automated retraining, and model governance at enterprise scale.

The problem nobody mentions: models that never reach production

According to estimates compiled by RAND, more than 80% of AI projects fail — twice the rate of technology projects that don’t involve AI (RAND). Not because the models are technically weak — many post excellent metrics in test notebooks — but because nobody has worked out how to integrate them into real systems, how to maintain them when the data changes, or how to diagnose why they start performing worse weeks after launch.

MLOps — the discipline that applies DevOps principles to the machine learning lifecycle — exists to solve exactly this problem.

Why ML models fail in production

Model drift and data drift

A model trained on six-month-old data can perform well on day one in production and then degrade gradually, unnoticed, until the damage shows up in the business. Real data changes: customer behavior shifts, raw material prices fluctuate, a new product category appears. The model doesn’t learn these changes unless it’s retrained.

Gaps between development and production

The model works on the data scientist’s laptop with perfectly prepared data. In production, data arrives late, with missing fields and slightly different formats. These gaps between the experimentation and production environments are the most common cause of deployment failures.

No monitoring

A production model without monitoring is a black box that may be failing silently. Without alerts on input data distribution, prediction distribution, and the business metrics tied to the model, there’s no way to catch degradation before it has a real impact.

The MLOps stack we implement

Experiment tracking

Tools like MLflow, Weights & Biases, or Neptune log every training run: which data, which hyperparameters, which metrics. That ends the “I don’t know how I trained the best model” problem and makes any result reproducible.

Automated training pipelines

Retraining shouldn’t be a manual process that depends on someone remembering to run it. Automated pipelines retrain the model on a schedule or when drift is detected, run quality checks, and — if the new model beats the old one — deploy it automatically.

CI/CD for machine learning

Applying continuous integration and delivery to ML code ensures every change to the model or pipeline passes automated tests before it reaches production. That reduces the risk of a well-intentioned change quietly degrading production performance.

Production monitoring

Dashboards that show in real time whether input data distribution has shifted (data drift), whether predictions are drifting from their expected distribution (prediction drift), and whether the business metrics tied to the model are moving in the right direction.

When to invest in MLOps

You don’t need MLOps for a prototype or proof of concept. You need it the moment the model starts influencing real business decisions. If a churn model is feeding your retention team’s decisions, it needs monitoring. If a credit scoring model is approving or rejecting applications, it needs auditing and controlled retraining.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a dedicated MLOps team?

For companies running more than two or three models in production at once, having at least one MLOps or ML engineer makes sense. For companies with a single model or early-stage projects, managed tools (MLflow, cloud ML platforms) bring the operational load down to a level the existing team can handle.

How do you detect model drift before it causes damage?

Statistical monitoring compares the distribution of current data with the training data using statistical tests (PSI, KL divergence). When the difference crosses a set threshold, the system raises an alert. The key is deciding how much drift you can tolerate before retraining, which depends on how fast your business changes.

How long does a basic MLOps infrastructure take to implement?

Projects that design MLOps from the start of model development are more efficient than those that try to bolt it on later. Scope and timeline depend on your existing infrastructure.
